research
Adipose-derived stem cells (ASCs) are being explored for use in neural regeneration applications because they are known to secrete factors neural-specific and wound healing growth factors and can be readily sourced by liposuction. Exogenous electrical stimulation was applied to ASCs to test if it is possible to augment pro- regenerative secretome production. The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of field strength and time of stimulation on ASCs viability and metabolism.
Cirrhosis, a progressive fibrotic liver disease, is often associated with elevated ammonia levels, hypotension due to systematic vasodilation, and risk of kidney failure (hepatorenal syndrome). However, the role of ammonia in the systemic vasodilation is unknown. We hypothesized that ammonia directly acts on vascular smooth muscle cells to cause vasodilation.
The University of Florida Multidisciplinary RET is in its fourth year bringing together engineering research scientists, K-5 educators, and industry professionals. Elementary educators’ beliefs and attitudes toward STEM have a significant impact on their students’ attitudes and confidence in STEM subjects. This unique program enables K-5 educators to confidently teach STEM concepts and lay the foundation of STEM interest and skills for their students. The goal of the program is to empower individual educators with the skills required to impact the larger public education community.
